Ugg to launch custom boot, flip-flop program Wednesday
Ugg Australia is set to join the custom footwear fray with a program that will allow customers to design and purchase bespoke color combinations of its sheepskin booties.
Scheduled to go live Wednesday, the Ugg by You Web interface (which can be accessed through Ugg’s website once the site goes live at 6 a.m. Pacific time on Wednesday) will allow Ugg lovers to customize two different Ugg styles: the Classic Short Boot and the Fluff Flip Flop slipper, with the finished footwear estimated to ship within four to six weeks.
For the short boot -- that’s the nearly ubiquitous silhouette you’re probably most familiar with (and the one in the photo above) -- options include specifying the color of the boot (10 options), the binding around the top edge of the boot and where the leather meets the outsole (five options), heel counter (12 color choices) and outsole (five options).
The color choices range from subtle (tan, black, chestnut) to slightly standout (shades called billiard green, purple velvet and sangria) with two additional eye-catching heel-only colors (metallic silver and metallic gold) that will add $5 to the $220 purchase price. (By comparison, a non-custom pair of the same style sells for $155 through Ugg’s website.)
Custom versions of Ugg’s sheepskin flip-flop/slipper, which will run you $110 (compared to $80 for a non-custom pair), allow the customer to pick the colors of the sheepskin footbed, lace, webbing and binding.
According to the folks at Ugg Australia (whom we assume have accurately crunched the numbers), that makes for some 6,000 possible boot combinations and 5,184 permutations of flip-flop.
But, if you’re like us and have an Ugg addict on your holiday gift list, you’re probably already trying to crunch another set of numbers -- so we’ll save you the hassle.
Based on the high end of Ugg’s estimated turnaround time -- and building in an extra week just to be safe -- ordering by Nov. 6 should ensure a very Uggy holiday.
After all, what could possibly be more elfish on Christmas morning than a pair of those classic short boots in billiard green with red accents?
