Italian luxury labels getting some serious exposure during Sunday night's Emmy Awards telecast included Canali and Prada, worn by two of the night's winners -- Michael Douglas and Jeff Daniels, respectively -- as well as Dolce & Gabbana, which dressed the evening's host Neil Patrick Harris.
While, as Times fashion critic Booth Moore pointed out in this morning's paper, it was a blue-ribbon red-carpet moment for American designers who ended up dressing some of the evening's standout women including Tina Fey (in Narciso Rodriguez), Zooey Deschanel (J. Mendel) and Padma Lakshmi (KaufmanFranco), the garbing of the guy's side was more of a polyglot affair.
Daniels took to the stage to accept his outstanding lead actor in a drama series award (for “Newsroom”) in a Prada midnight blue, two-button, tela mohair, notch-lapel tuxedo. Douglas gave a heartfelt acceptance speech (for his "Behind the Candelabra" actor in a movie or miniseries win) decked out in a Canali tux accessorized with Martin Katz black-and-white diamond cuff links.
Jim Parsons, who won for lead actor in a comedy ("The Big Bang Theory") also went with an Italian label -- in his case a shawl-collar tux from Z Zegna.
Mark Burnett, who took to the stage to accept the reality competition Emmy for "The Voice," made a statement in a navy brocade tuxedo by Danish label Sand Copenhagen. Bryan Cranston, star of the drama award winner "Breaking Bad," went "Breaking Burberry" with a notch-lapel tuxedo from the British brand -- which also dressed costar Aaron Paul.
But there were certainly American menswear brands in the winner's circle too: Bobby Cannavale, who won for supporting actor in a drama ("Boardwalk Empire"), wore a black matte wool, one-button peak lapel tuxedo with black satin lapels from the fall 2013 Calvin Klein collection; and Stephen Colbert, whose "The Colbert Report" took home two Emmys (variety series and writing for a variety series), was kitted out in a custom Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers tuxedo with a silk faille notch lapel, paired with a checkered stud set.
