Salvatore Ferragamo dresses Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones in ‘Inferno’

There’s a lot of Italy in Ron Howard’s latest film “Inferno,” based on the Dan Brown novel of the same title, and premiering in Florence on Saturday. The Oscar-winning director asked the Florence-based Salvatore Ferragamo Group to design costumes for the main characters of the film — Tom Hanks, once again playing Robert Langdon, the teacher of sacred iconology at Harvard University, and Felicity Jones in the role of Sienna Brooks.

Florence also serves as the background for most of the scenes in the movie, which was also filmed in Venice and Istanbul.

Ferragamo described the looks for Hanks as “decidedly urban, elegant and discreet.” In the film, the Oscar-winning actor wears a simple charcoal gray suit, a sky-blue shirt and a pair of Tramezza handcrafted lace-ups.

Jones dons a simple, soft-cut silk blouse in a feminine nude color, worn over gray cigarette-leg pants and Ferragamo’s staple Vara pumps with platform heels. The look is completed by an indigo trench.

In the movie, Jones also sports a military green nylon jacket realized by Italian outerwear specialist Peuterey, which is the main sponsor of the VIP Lounge at Teatro dell’Opera hosting the movie’s cast before the screening. The Tuscan company created a commercial version of the piece, available both in a short and long version and embellished with a fur hood, which will hit Peuterey flagships as well as selected multibrand stores such as Luisa Via Roma, La Rinascente and Lodenfrey the day of the film’s release.

The characters’ understated look is meant to contrast with the fast pace of the film and the opulent locations, from the bell tower of the Badia Fiorentina, where the first scene is set, to the Uffizi Gallery and the Boboli Gardens and Palazzo Vecchio, to name a few.

This is the latest chapter of Howard’s trilogy adapted from Brown’s best-selling books, and follows “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels And Demons,” also starring Hanks.

The late Salvatore Ferragamo was a pioneer in Hollywood and was dubbed “shoemaker to the stars,” as he famously shod actresses from Mae West and Audrey Hepburn to Marilyn Monroe and Joan Crawford. In 2015, the fashion and accessories house celebrated its 100 years in Hollywood with the reopening of its Rodeo Drive flagship.

Ferragamo first partnered with Howard in 2012, when the house was asked to design the costumes for the characters of Niki Lauda and his wife in the biographical sports drama “Rush,” played by Daniel Brühl with Alexandra Maria Lara.

“Inferno” will be released worldwide on Oct. 13.
