Take a lesson from JLo’s makeup artist. Here’s what you’ll need for sheer, glowing summertime beauty

When it comes to your beauty routine, there’s no need to succumb to the season’s sweltering heat. There are ways to make sure your makeup doesn’t look clumpy or heavy and that you continue to maintain a fresh, youthful appearance.

“Spring and summer have always lent themselves to more golden, glowy makeup,” says Mary Phillips, Jennifer Lopez’s makeup artist who has worked with Teigen, Ciara, Gwen Stefani and Kim Kardashian West.

Brands such as Christian Dior, Pat McGrath Labs, Spa Ritual and newcomer Milk Makeup sell summer-ready products such as lip tints, nail polishes, blush balms and foundations that give the sheerest hint of glamorous, barely there color.

If you want to make sure you’ll have a healthy, beauty glow this summer, the first thing you’ll want to do is take good care of yourself, including your skin.

“That is No. 1,” Phillips says. “As fake as some beauty is right now, there’s also something on the opposite end of the spectrum that’s very holistic and pure – the mind-body-soul approach. Good, glowy skin, as cheesy as this sounds, comes from within.”

And you’ll want to be a faster learner. Phillips says the biggest mistake people make with highlighting or strobing is not choosing the right color. They use “shades that are too white, light and frosty,” she said. “Highlighting is supposed to be a sexy illusion. Think of a vacation in a tropical paradise with dewy, moistened skin, and the sun hitting everything just right.”

Phillips recommends using Chantecaille Liquid Lumière Highlighting Fluid ($39, nordstrom.com); Tata Harper Very Illuminating Cheek Tint ($40, tataharperskincare.com); and Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Poured Crème ($38, sephora.com).

Also for that summertime glow, don’t forget to use makeup that offers sheer but easy-to-layer buildable color with “wet-based finishes … a variation of creams, mousses, tints, liquids, balm, stains etc.,” says Phillips. “It’s more 3-D [looking]. It tricks the eye into making you look more beautiful versus your makeup looking beautiful.”

Now if you decided to get creative and add gold, glitter or bronze, just remember: A little goes a long way. Therefore, consider using Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish 003 highlighter ($72, sephora.com).

Other products worth including in your beauty arsenal are: Tom Ford Naked Bronze Cream and Powder Eye Color ($60, nordstrom.com); NYX Cosmetics Face & Body Glitter, Baked Shadow and Glitter Slim Eye Pencils ($3.50-$6, nyxcosmetics.com); Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Gold Glitter ($15, occmakeup.com); and Make Up For Ever Glitters ($15-$79, makeupforever.com).
