Dig the ‘70s makeup styles on HBO’s ‘Vinyl’? Here are 8 picks for re-creating them at home

If you haven’t noticed, the clothes and makeup styles of the 1970s are back — again — in a big way. Think metallic blue eye shadow, spangly nails, flushed cheeks, scant eyebrows and, of course, flared pants.

These looks from decades past have played a major role in HBO’s new series, “Vinyl,” co-executive produced by Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese, set in 1970s New York during an era of drugs, sex and rock ‘n’ roll at the start of disco, punk and hip-hop. (The first season of “Vinyl,” which has received modest ratings, wraps up Sunday, and the show has been renewed for a second season.)

Since “Vinyl’s” premiere in February, makeup artists have been predicting that iterations of ‘70s beauty looks would become popular again, moving into spring and summer.

“You can never underestimate the power of an HBO series to influence how people look,” says Wende Zomnir, co-founder of beauty brand Urban Decay, which collaborated with HBO to create makeup looks inspired by “Vinyl’s” makeup artist Nicki Ledermann’s work on the show. “Seventies beauty is very intriguing, and it comes back and forth as a result of that.”

Re-creating these makeup looks for today is easy, Zomnir says.

She suggests taking these iconic ‘70s details and scaling them back for a fresh yet retro look. For example, only a minimal amount of Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner should be used for daytime looks, and perhaps save a heavier look for a night on the town.

“A little on top of the eyelid, right in the center, adds some fire and sparkle but doesn’t scream glitter,” she says.

New York-based makeup artist David Maderich says the 1970s trend appeared on several spring/summer 2016 fashion runways, and while the look of that decade has returned this year, he says the ‘70s vibe definitely skews to a younger woman.

“If you already wore it in the ‘70s, don’t do it again,” he says.

For those seeking ‘70s flare, he advises selecting one element such as gold shimmer powder, blue eye shadow or bright lip gloss and playing it up.

“Don’t combine them all,” he says. “If you want to wear the trend currently, do it in a way that is softer and more muted than before.”

Even the decade’s signature cat’s eye liner could be reined in a bit. On “Vinyl,” characters wear a heavy black liner above and beneath the eye. Zomnir says women today need to do a more streamlined version.

“We call it a baby cat’s eye,” Zomnir says. “You want it to be cute and pretty and not a huge extended severe wing.”
