Step up, get your Madeira library now

Share

A few years ago when I was planning a trip to the island of Madeira, I found plenty of tourist information but very little on what interested me most: the wine.

The only book I turned up was the 1984 tome “Madeira, the Island Vineyard” by Noel Cossart, which I got on loan from the library. I wish I could have had a copy to read while I was traveling.
Now Rare Wine Co., one of the few importers to deal in vintage Madeira, has not one but three books on Madeira on offer at a special three-pack price. $99.95 plus postage buys you “The Essential Madeira Library,” which includes the expanded 2011 edition of “Madeira, the Island Vineyard” (the Rare Wine Co., 2011), plus “Madeira” by Alex Liddell (Faber & Faber, 1998, now out of print) and “Oceans of Wine” by David Hancock (Yale University Press, 2009). The regular price for all three would be $121.50.

Overkill? I really don’t think so. The 500-year-old history of Madeira and the wine trade is fascinating. Of course, you’re going to be doing your reading with a glass of Madeira in hand. The only way to study.
