NEW YORK – Victoria Beckham showed her spring-summer 2013 collection in the gorgeous Astor Hall of the New York Public Library on the Sunday morning of New York Fashion Week. When Beckham launched her collection in 2009, which is owned by both Victoria and David Beckham, as well as Simon Fuller’s 19 Entertainment, the fashion industry didn’t really take her seriously. But the former Spice Girl quickly gained respect and commercial success for creating luxe ladylike, body-conscious dresses.

She has since expanded into accessories, and launched the lower-priced Victoria by Victoria Beckham line. With eyewear coming in 2013, and a first store on the horizon, Beckham is heading for fashion mogul status.

The look: Sporty and controlled but with a feminine touch. Breezy-looking silk shirts, some with wispy wing-like details at the sides, tucked into longer-length silk skirts. Short pleated skirts reminiscent of tennis garb worn with razor-sharp coats zippered at the waist. Nineties-esque, body-con mini-dresses with bra tops, crisscrossing straps and eyelet insets. Perhaps most lust-worthy though, were Beckham’s crisp, short-sleeve, button-down cotton shirts, boxy and slightly oversize, with lace or eyelet insets. The flat gladiator sandals by Manolo Blahnik were pretty great, too. The color palette was anchored in black, white, navy and khaki with punches of bright orange.

The scene: Intimate. Proud hubbie David Beckham snapped photos of the models from the sidelines.

The verdict: A knockout. Beckham’s collection is really evolving, and it’s been impressive to watch her designing things that you wouldn’t necessarily imagine her wearing. The brand isn’t just about Beckham anymore, it’s about her customer.
