Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaulo Piccioli presented their fall 2013 Valentino collection Tuesday afternoon in the Tuileries Garden during Paris Fashion Week.

The look: Elegant simplicity with rich materials from the very first looks, charming A-line black dresses with white lace cuffs and collars. Tough and sweet. (Those sweet-looking dresses came out later in red and black velvet, with laser cut leather collars.) A rounded white cape coat, along with a black leather duffel coat. White knit sweater dress with lace insets. Densely embroidered gowns inspired by Delft ceramics. Black and white patent leather lace-up shoes.

The inspiration: The Flemish Masters and Calvinist simplicity, according to the collection notes.

The verdict: Lovely from start to finish. It’s amazing how these designers have been able to transform Valentino’s Roman aesthetic of red dresses and ruffled excess into something that’s completely their own.
