If there is a poster child for the return of 1990s-era grunge fashion, it’s Sky Ferreira.

The singer and model, who was born in L.A. but now seems to live all over, was a muse for Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane’s “California Grunge” fall 2013 collection. And the designer tapped her to star in the label’s pre-fall ad campaign, decked out in black lace, leather and studs.

So it was only fitting that Ferreira, 21, would hit this weekend’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, which was born out of the post-punk, alternative rock and grunge music scene, having been created in 1991 by Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell. It’s the same music scene that resonated on runways for fall, with 1980s and ‘90s-inspired leather, chains and studs seen not only at Saint Laurent, but at Fendi, Chanel, Versace, 3.1 Phillip Lim and elsewhere.

Over the weekend, Ferreira played the part of a grunge fashion plate, wearing a black bra, briefs, mesh sweater and combat boots with a button-down shirt tied around her waist. I wish I could have been there to see what other people were wearing. I imagine it was quite different than SoCal’s Coachella music festival look.

Coachella is a serious fashion-branding juggernaut, with H&M, Armani Exchange and other labels throwing big events around the festival and gifting celebrities clothes to wear there. With the return of punk and grunge to fashion, I wonder if Lollapalooza will become the same?

M.A.C. Cosmetics hosted a party celebrating the female performers of Lollapolooza with makeup artists on hand to create festival-inspired looks. Maybe other brands will follow next year.

The Cure, the Killers, Nine Inch Nails and Mumford & Sons were among the bands to play Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park. This year’s event drew record attendance.
