Victoria’s Secret model just part of the larger tribal trend
Fashion and pop culture have long had a fascination with Native American garb (Ralph Lauren, among others, comes to mind). Some artists and designers have pulled it off successfully, but many of the recent attempts have been, well, controversial. Apologies are in season.
Last week, Victoria’s Secret had to issue an apology after sending 20-year-old Karlie Kloss down the runway in a floor-length headdress (and little else). (That particular “outfit” won’t be part of the CBS broadcast of the fashion show next month.)

Gwen Stefani and her band mates recently pulled a video that depicted a Wild West scene with Gwen wearing ... what else? A Native American headdress. The song was named, perhaps unfortunately, “Looking Hot.” (They apologized as well.)
Remember Lana Del Rey? For her recent video she donned … wait for it! … an Indian headdress.
And who can forget Urban Outfitters’ salute to native culture with items that included the “Navajo Print Fabric Wrapped Flask” and, our personal favorite, the “Navajo Hipster Panty.”
What’s next? Will Santa don a headdress for his 2012 trip around the globe?
Ironically, November is Native American Month, but we’re not reading many push-backs on fashion and culture blogs. For that we might have to go to Sasha Houston Brown, who recently posted at Indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com.
She wrote: “I don’t know about you, but I usually spend this time of year parading around in my Navajo Hipster panties, feather headdress (on loan from Karlie Kloss and Gwen Stefani), Manifest Destiny T-Shirt and knee-high fringed moccasins made in Taiwan while watching a Redskins game, smoking a pack of American Spirits and eating genetically modified Butterball turkey, because I’m just that traditional.” (Brown is a member of the Santee Sioux tribe of Nebraska.)
Here’s hoping we’re all on our best behavior come Thanksgiving, when we celebrate ... oh, never mind.
