A couple of looks caught my eye from the Women in Film’s Crystal + Lucy Awards presented at the Beverly Hilton on Wednesday night in Beverly Hills.

At left, Sofia Coppola wore a chic short black Valentino dress from the spring 2013 collection. Coppola has always had her own refreshingly demure style, and I like this simple sleeveless dress with just a hint of sheerness and a crisp white collar. It’s serious and grown-up, but not stodgy.

I’m starting to see a lot of black-and-white looks on the red carpet and in stores. Perhaps it’s the influence of Marc Jacobs’ ‘60s-themed spring 2013 runway collection trickling down to real life. Whatever the reason, it’s a nice palette cleanser after so many seasons of riotous color and prints.

Not that prints are over just yet. And no one does them better than British designer Mary Katrantzou, who dressed January Jones for the Women in Film event. This “Babelonia” jacquard cap sleeve dress is like a painting.

The silhouette is a bit more retro conservative than what I’m used to seeing Jones wear off-screen, but I think it was a good choice for the evening, which was about celebrating women’s hard-won achievements in Hollywood, more than their sex appeal.
