$450 metal Starbucks cards selling for $2,500 on eBay

Share

People are going cray-cray for the $450 all-metal Starbucks cards on eBay. The cards, which come preloaded with $400 worth of Starbucks credit and automatically elevate your “My Starbucks Rewards” account to “gold-level status” are selling on the site for $2,500.

One card was listed for a “buy it now” price of $5,000, but the auction ended before a sale could be made.

A quick search brings up 225 results. That number is high for an item whose maker, Starbucks and Gilt.com, claims that only 1,000 were released. Most of the card sellers on eBay play up the “rare” factor with descriptions that read “extremely rare 1000 made,” “what an awesome exclusive XMas gift” and “limited edition only 1000 made.”

When the sleek gift cards went on sale last week, they sold out in seconds. They are all hand-assembled and feature a rose metal base and rose-colored coating. And being a “gold member” entitles you to a free birthday treat, a 15% off coupon at StarbucksStore.com, free refills on iced or brewed coffee and tea and a frequent buyer program with stars.

Seems like a lot to pay for free refills, a coupon and the prestige of holding a metal Starbucks card, but judging by the eBay sales, there are Starbucks fanatics willing to open their wallets.
