SAG Awards 2015: Why so serious on the red carpet?

The SAG Awards red carpet arrivals have begun, and so far, the dresses have been incredibly subdued.

Why so serious? It’s January in L.A., not New York. Where’s the color and the fun?

Sarah Hyland was one of the first to step onto the carpet. The “Modern Family” star went with Vera Wang, despite the fact that at the Golden Globe Awards two weeks ago, Rosamund Pike’s white Vera Wang gown was almost universally panned.

Hyland’s gown is more traditional — black with a nude overlay and a jeweled bodice. It has the kind of plunging front we’re used to seeing on the red carpet (sticky tape is a girl’s best friend).

Another early arrival, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is wearing a long, black Monique Lhuillier gown with heavy-looking black lace sleeves, which is a departure from her typically more modern silhouettes from Narciso Rodriguez.

Then there’s Emilia Clarke. The star looks more “Downton Abbey” than “Game of Thrones” in a navy and black Donna Karan with bands wrapping the shoulders and a train.

Let’s hope things brighten up.
