‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ sequel to walk back down the aisle

Nia Vardalos has said “I do” to a sequel to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” her breakthrough 2002 romantic comedy about a woman trying to get her boisterous Aegean family to accept her non-Greek fiance, played by John Corbett.

Vardalos, who wrote and starred in the original film, confirmed the project on her Twitter account Tuesday, writing “I’m working on the MBFGWedding sequel; now that I’m experiencing motherhood I feel ready to write this next chapter.”

She added, “A few jaded press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”

The plot for the sequel revolves around the revelation of a Portokalos family secret and a bigger, fatter wedding. According to Vardalos, the “entire big fat family is invited back for the sequel.”

The original “Greek Wedding” was directed by Joel Zwick and also starred Lainie Kazan, Michael Constantine, Andrea Martin and Louis Mandylor. Producers Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are expected to return for the sequel.

Shot on a $5-million budget, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” emerged as a critical and box-office hit that grossed more than $368 million worldwide and earned Vardalos an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
