Oscars 2015: ‘The Phone Call’ wins live-action short

“The Phone Call,” a short film that tells about a fateful call that is received by a worker in a crisis call center and an encounter that changes the lives of the people on the call, won the Oscar for live-action short film Sunday night.

The film stars Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins as the call center worker Heather and Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent as the troubled caller Stan. Other cast members include Edward Hogg (Daniel) and Prunella Scales (Joan).

The short is written, directed and produced by Mat Kirkby, with James Lucas as co-writer. The film has earned plaudits from the Tribcea Film Festival, the Seattle Film Festival, Helsinki and many more. And the talent of the cast that they were able to assemble for a 20-minute project was not lost on the director.

“It was a real dream come true working with Jim and Sally. Jim is an Oscar-winning legend, and Sally had literally been filming with Woody Allen and Cate Blanchett a couple of weeks previously, so, as you can imagine, I was pinching myself rather a lot on set,” said Kirkby on the film’s website.

“Phone Call” beat out four other films in the live-action short category:

“Aya”: a film about two strangers unexpectedly meeting at an airport and spending time together during their, at first, mistaken encounter.

“Boogaloo and Graham”: a story of two young brothers growing up -- amid war in Ireland -- raising chickens and the upheaval caused when their mother announces that another sibling is on the way.

“Butter Lamp (La Lampe Au Beurre De Yak)”: A photographer and his assistant get Tibetan nomads together and photograph them in front of various backgrounds, then reveal the true location of the set.

“Parvaneh”: This Swiss short tells the story of an Afghan teenager living in a refugee center in Switzerland and how she befriends a young woman who attempts to help her wire money to her family.
