Latin-fused Supersonico returns with Aterciopelados, Ximena Sariñana leading lineup

Supersonico, hailed as the first major Latin alternative festival in Los Angeles of the decade, has announced its return.

Aterciopelados, Mala Rodriguez and Ximena Sariñana lead the bill for the second edition of the Latino-focused festival, which will be Oct. 3 at the Hollywood Palladium, organizers announced Tuesday.

Crossing rock, pop, hip-hop and electronica genres, Supersonico also showcases local art, cuisine and crafts.

This year’s lineup will see the return of Colombian rock band Aterciopelados and the return of Nortec Collective’s Bostich and Fussible in one of the duo’s final shows. Others on board include Mexican Institute of Sound, Mariachi El Bronx, Hello Seahorse! and Prayers, while organizers promise “more surprises on the way.”

Billed as a multilingual, multigenre, multistage, cultural happening, Supersonico was launched in 2014 as an alternative for the Spanish-speaking youth market itching for a music experience akin to Coachella and Stagecoach.

Supersonico’s inaugural year at L.A.’s Shrine Expo Hall and Grounds was a sellout. Times pop critic Randall Roberts offered this in his review of the festival: “Despite logistical issues, the festival’s first run mostly succeeded as a well-curated, if razor thin, sampling of artists who playfully, joyously mixed the synthetic and the electric and explored styles from throughout the Americas and beyond.”

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday through Ticketmaster and also are available at Amoeba Music.
