Jason Jones exits ‘The Daily Show’ to star in TBS comedy series

Here’s another person who seems unlikely to succeed Jon Stewart at “The Daily Show”: Jason Jones.

Jones, the longtime correspondent on Comedy Central’s nightly news spoof, announced Tuesday he’s leaving the show to star in his own as-yet-untitled comedy series for TBS, about a family’s cross-country adventures on a road trip. Production on the 10-episode order is scheduled to begin this summer.

Jones co-created the series with his wife, Samantha Bee, who’s also a correspondent on “The Daily Show.” Bee is sticking with the Comedy Central show for now -- and presumably could remain on the network’s shortlist of Stewart replacements -- while Jones is packing up.

“For 9 1/2 years I have worked at one of the greatest TV shows of all time,” he wrote on Twitter. “But ... It is time for me to go.”

That would seem to eliminate any chance that Jones could wind up as the permanent replacement for Stewart, who announced this month that he would exit “Daily Show” later this year. Jones and Bee have filled in for Stewart on occasion.

Also not in the running: John Oliver, the former “Daily Show” correspondent and guest host whose HBO show “Last Week Tonight” was just picked up for two more seasons, through 2017.

That leaves a “Daily Show” host wish list that includes household names such as Amy Poehler and Chris Rock, as well as “Daily Show” regulars like correspondent Aasif Mandvi. Let the guessing game continue!
