Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe’s rustic hideaway surfaces in Laurel Canyon

Ian Thorpe, the Olympic freestyle champion, has put his home in the Laurel Canyon area of Hollywood Hills on the market for $950,000.

The hillside home, built in 1961, was originally owned by actor John Compton of “Mildred Pierce” and “The D.A.’s Man.” Celebrity publicist Elliot Mintz, whose clients have included John Lennon, Diana Ross and Bob Dylan, is another former owner.

Measuring just under 1,000 square feet in size, the rustic post-and-beam includes an updated kitchen dressed in white subway tile, an open living room, a wood-paneled office and two bedrooms. Walls of glass look out onto an arch-topped balcony centering on the canyon below.

Outdoors, a large deck has a trellis-topped dining area and a wet bar. A second viewing deck is reached by a wooden staircase.

Views extend as far as the downtown cityscape and the Getty.

Thorpe bought the house a decade ago for $879,000, records show.

Denise Hamilton of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage holds the listing.

Thorpe, 33, captured a combined five gold medals at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic games. Nicknamed the “Thorpedo,” he is among Australia’s most decorated athletes of all time.
