Los Angeles area leads nation in pick-up truck thefts

Share

Texas leads the nation as the state with the most pick-up truck thefts, but the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is the top urban location in that criminal category.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau studied nationwide vehicle thefts for pick-ups from the model years 2011-2013, screened by type of truck and location.

The study concluded that ten times more full-size pick-ups were stolen than the compact versions, and that Texas, California and Florida were the states with the highest numbers of thefts.

Between them, Texas and California account for more than 40% of all pick-up truck thefts.

The good news? More than 80% of the theft victims got their vehicles back, the NICB study found.

A recent Times story noted that Honda’s Accord and Civic sedans were the two most stolen vehicles in America last year. But pick-ups were close behind.

Thieves stole 53,995 Accords last year, and another 45,001 of the smaller Civic sedan, according the the NICB. Criminals snatched 27,809 Chevrolet Silverados last year and another 26,594 Ford F-series trucks.
