A cat convention created to debunk stereotypes of what it means to be a “cat lady” is set to return to Los Angeles for its second run June 25 and 26.

CatConLA returns to the Reef in downtown L.A. complete with several new events and attractions including an escape room that requires participants to think like a cat and a “Furrocious Fashion Face-Off” contest in which competitors wear their best “catspirational attire.”

Creator and organizer Susan Michals created CatConLA to show that cat owners don’t necessarily fit the “cat lady” stereotype.

“People think that cat ladies are spinster shut-ins,” Michals said.

That’s why aesthetics are important to the event, she said. Rather than host it in a bland, large convention center, she said the goal is for the event’s space to resemble an art gallery with concrete floors and hardwood walls.

“We curate everything,” she said. “We vet each vendor.”

Michals had expected between 8,000 and 10,000 feline fanciers to attend last year’s inaugural CatConLA event, which she said drew some 12,500 cat people.

To handle this year’s anticipated crowd of 15,000 to 20,000 people, organizers have added another floor — some 35,000 square feet — to the convention.

Besides the ridding of stereotypes, CatConLA is also a response to trends in cat-inspired fashion and popularity of cats in general.

“You can go to Urban Outfitters, type in ‘cat’ and a hundred things will pop up,” Michals said.

Several familiar faces — human and feline — are expected to appear at CatConLA this weekend.

Celebrity cat Lil Bub and her owner Mike Bridavsky, who were on hand — make that paw — last year, return for two events. For one, they will be co-hosts for the CatVideoFest with comedian Andy Milonakis. New to the meow mix will be actress Julie Newmar, the original Catwoman from the ’60s television series “Batman,” who will sign books and photos.

Having cat lovers with strong influence such as Kat Von D and Cats of Instagram team Eli Omidi and Kady Lone involved helps dispel the negative stereotypes even further, Michals said.

Like last year, CatConLA attendees will be able to stock up on a range of feline-focused items including catnip gnomes, pet wigs and nonalcoholic wine for cats and take home a cat from the Clowder Lounge, which will have more than 100 cats and kittens available for meet-and-greets with prospective owners.

“You can have one-on-one time to see if your personalities match,” Michals said.
