A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man Monday following reports of a person armed with a handgun.

Authorities said no weapon was recovered at the scene.

The officer-involved shooting occurred about 2:40 p.m. near Downey Avenue south of Rosecrans Avenue, Sgt. Pauline Panis said. The man, in his late 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A school resource deputy at Paramount High School received a tip about a possible fight, authorities said. A second person told the officer that one of the men was armed with a handgun.

Another deputy who was responding to the call saw a number of people who fit the description and attempted to make contact with one of them, “at which point a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

No deputies were injured, and there are no outstanding suspects.

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, sheriff’s homicide bureau and the internal affairs bureau were expected to investigate the fatal shooting, as is standard procedure in all deputy-involved shootings.
