Railroad crossing arm spears school bus in South L.A.
A student peers through the broken window of a school bus that was in an accident involving a Metro train crossing arm Tuesday morning at 55th Street and Long Beach Avenue in South Los Angeles.
A railroad crossing arm pierced a school bus with eight special needs children aboard in South Los Angeles, officials said Tuesday, but no injuries were reported.
The Los Angeles Fire Department received a call at 7:37 a.m. about a traffic collision in the 1700 block of East 55th Street, said Erik Scott, LAFD spokesman. A train crossing arm had gone through the window of the bus.
“It was an unusual incident,” Scott said. “At this point it appears there were no injuries.”
LAPD dispatched a unit to the location at 55th and Long Beach Avenue, said Officer Liliana Preciado. An ambulance had been requested to treat for minor cuts, Preciado said.
There were eight special needs children on the bus who were headed to school and none of them was injured, said Gayle Pollard-Terry, LAUSD spokesperson. Another school bus picked up the students and took them to school, she said.
