2-year-old is on life support after hit-and-run in San Bernardino

The California Highway Patrol is looking for a driver who hit and critically injured a 2-year-old boy after failing to stop when the child darted across the street to see his uncle, media outlets have reported.

Family members told KTLA the boy’s name is Jonathan Montes and he was playing with his older brother Tuesday evening when Jonathan saw his uncle across the street and ran to him.

Jonathan was hit by a vehicle described as an older-model, silver Subaru that was speeding about 40 mph in a 25 mph zone, KTLA reported. Jonathan was thrown 100 feet before slamming onto the ground.

The boy is on life support.

“All I just saw was his shoes fly off of him … and the little toy gun that he had fly down the street,” Jonathan’s uncle, Nicholas Ortega, told KTLA. “It’s just hard to know that ... someone could do that ... especially to a little baby.”

Family members said the car never slowed.
