Clark Sanchez-Figueras scored the game-winning goal with eight minutes left in the first half. Chaminade took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chris Estu, but St. Francis (14-4, 2-0) tied the score when Chris Hertz scored off an assist from Jeff Buddenbohn. Goalkeeper Tashi Nakanishi saved a penalty shot in the second half for St. Francis, the defending Southern Section Division II co-champion.

Andrew Tillehkooh scored with two minutes remaining in overtime to lift host Edison (12-1, 1-0). Matt Blank, Brandon Plummer and Ian Cone each scored in the first half for the Chargers, who squandered a 3-0 halftime lead.

Fountain Valley 2, Esperanza 0
Jonathan Yanez of No. 4 Fountain Valley (12-1-1) came off the bench to score his first two goals of the season in the league opener at Esperanza. Yanez, a junior midfielder, entered the game midway through the first half and scored his first goal at the 30-minute mark after taking a long pass from Sean Keeley. He scored his second goal five minutes later when he was able to loft a shot over Esperanza goalkeeper James Frazer. Esperanza (14-2-1), the No. 2-ranked team in the Southland by The Times, had several good opportunities to score in the second half. But goalkeeper Trenton Painter made several outstanding saves for Fountain Valley. The shutout was the seventh of the season for Fountain Valley, which had suffered a 1-0 loss to Esperanza on an own goal in the championship game of the Marina tournament Dec. 29.

TOURNAMENTS

ANAHEIM CANYON
Championship

Damien 4, Servite 0
The Spartans, who outscored their five tournament opponents, 14-2, took a 1-0 lead 22 minutes into the first half when Chukwudi Chijindu scored off an assist from Sean Jarvis. Jarvis had taken a long pass from Luke Belmont, advanced the ball about 20 yards up the right side before lofting a crossing pass that the onrushing Chukwudi tapped past Servite goalkeeper Mike Lefonts.

Damien (14-2-2), eighth in the The Times’ Southland rankings, scored three times in the second half on goals by Javier De Luna, Mark Moreno and Jarvis. Matt Dailey had assists on the goals by De Luna and Moreno.

Servite (12-6-1) had outscored its opponents, 11-4, in winning its five previous games. But the Friars had few quality scoring chances against Damien. Lefonts, who recorded a school-record 16 shutouts last season, left the game after injuring his left knee on the play in which Chukwudi scored. But he was back in goal at the start of the second half before being replaced by Xavier Garay after Damien took a 3-0 lead.
