Nineteen games out of the division race with 45 games to play, the Angels are steadily approaching mathematical elimination. Within that framework, it stands to reason they should at least occasionally rest the players they envision as part of their future.

And so even as the Angels attempted to dissolve a season-long nine-game losing streak, Manager Mike Scioscia held Mike Trout out of their Sunday series finale in Cleveland.

“I wanted to [play], for sure,” Trout said. “But he came up to before the series and said he was going to give me a day off one of these days. It just happened to be today. We’re all grinding. Obviously, you want to be out there, but if Scioscia tells you you’re not in the lineup, you’re not gonna play.”

“He wants to keep us fresh, obviously, but we want to win ballgames.”

The streak stretched to 10 while Trout stood in the on-deck circle, waiting to pinch-hit if the Angels put a man on base while down one run. Scioscia said he did not want to use him to begin the inning because of a limited bench. Two of his starters had exited due to injury, and another, designated hitter Albert Pujols, had been ejected.

“We’re running a little short of maneuverability there,” Scioscia said. “If Mike gets ahold of one right there with a guy on, then we’ve got a chance to get a lead,” Scioscia said. “It’s just unfortunate we couldn’t get a guy on to get to him.”

Short hops

Shortstop Andrelton Simmons also sat out for rest purposes. It was his first time missing a start while on the active roster this season. He missed 34 games in May and June due to a torn thumb ligament. … Right-hander Cam Bedrosian (middle finger tendinitis) will be evaluated by a team doctor on Monday, Scioscia said, to determine if he is fit to resume throwing. He’s eligible to be activated Friday, but likely will not be. Garrett Richards (torn elbow ligament) will as well. … Closer Huston Street (inflamed right knee) threw a bullpen session over the weekend at the Angels’ spring-training facility in Arizona.
