Angels can’t hold back Royals in 5-4 loss

KEY MOMENT: The Angels appeared headed to extra innings with one out in the ninth inning when Salvador Perez hit what appeared to be an inning-ending double play grounder. Shortstop Erick Aybar fielded the ball cleanly and fed a nice relay to second baseman Howie Kendrick, who had plenty of time to complete the double play because Perez is extraordinarily slow. Instead, Kendrick took his eye off the ball and dropped it. The next batter, Omar Infante, singled home the winning run. Said Kendrick: “That’s on me.” Kendrick’s seven errors are tied for the most among American League second basemen.

AT THE PLATE: Kole Calhoun led off the game with a home run, and Aybar hit one too. Calhoun has seven home runs in 169 at-bats; fellow outfielder Josh Hamilton has three home runs in 124 at-bats.

ON THE MOUND: C.J. Wilson failed to survive the fourth inning, capping an ugly June. He had a 5.97 earned-run average for the month; the Angels were 2-4 in his starts. Wilson gave back all of a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning when the Royals scored four runs and had three hits, three walks — one with the bases loaded — and a hit batter.

IF AT FIRST: Hank Conger, batting .207 since May 1, tried to bunt against the shift in his first at-bat but bunted the ball back to the pitcher. In his second at-bat, Conger bunted again, this time for a hit. In his third at-bat, he singled over the shift. Conger has not hit a home run in his last 76 at-bats, with his last home run coming May 11.
