The Clippers announced late Saturday night that guard Austin Rivers had sustained a mild concussion during the team’s 133-105 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans at Staples Center and would enter the NBA’s concussion protocol.

Because the Clippers didn’t practice Sunday, there was no update on Rivers’ status for Monday night’s game at Staples Center against the Portland Trail Blazers.

He was injured in the third quarter after Pelicans forward Terrence Jones inadvertently hit Rivers on the chin with his left elbow, sending the Clippers guard onto the court.

Jasen Powell, the Clippers’ director of medical services/head athletic trainer, came over to assist Rivers while his teammates stood over him.

Rivers eventually got up with help and went to the bench. He wrapped a towel around his head, constantly shaking it and blinking his eyes while seated on the bench.

Clippers Coach Doc Rivers said Austin “passed all the tests” given to him while he was sidelined.

DeAndre Jordan said Austin “remembered his birthday” when the center quizzed his teammate on the bench.

Then when the fourth quarter started, Rivers went back into the game. But 46 seconds into the fourth, Rivers, with his head down, had to be helped into the locker room by his teammates.

“That blow obviously had a delayed effect,” Doc Rivers said. “He passed all the tests. Then right when he went back on the floor, you knew something was wrong.

“I saw him grab his head because of the noise [inside of Staples Center]. You knew something was going on. We got him out quick.”

Chris Paul, who had a knot behind his right ear from a hit on his head during the game, asked Rivers several questions while helping him to the locker room.

“What’s your number? Are you all right? Stuff like that,” Paul said. “Then I left it up to the people whose job it is for that.”

Boston’s Al Horford was out three weeks recovering from a concussion he suffered in practice.

Rivers, who had 18 points on six-for-nine shooting, including four of six on three-pointers, had started in place of Blake Griffin (sore right knee).

“As a competitor, you always want to give it a shot,” Paul said. “So, he [Rivers] kept trying to play and then he finally realized he couldn’t. I’m sure they are going to check on him.”

Etc.

Paul made history against the Pelicans when his 20 points, 20 assists and zero turnovers made him the first NBA player to have 20-plus points, 20-plus assists and no turnovers in a single game since individual turnovers were first recorded during the 1977-78 season. … Doc Rivers said Griffin and guard Raymond Felton, who missed the last two games attending his grandmother’s funeral, will be available for Monday night’s game against the Trail Blazers.
