Scott Van Slyke lifts Dodgers over Rockies in 12th

KEY MOMENT: Scott Van Slyke singled with one out in the 12th inning and came around to score the winning run by rounding the bases on a hit batter, a stolen base and a wild pitch. Van Slyke also had a run-scoring single, a stolen base and a run scored in the Dodgers’ four-run fifth-inning rally.

AT THE PLATE: Van Slyke and Justin Turner were the only Dodgers with multiple hits. But Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp each scored one run and drove in one, as did Adrian Gonzalez, whose long first-inning homer, his 26th of the year, upped his major league-leading RBI total to 113.

ON THE MOUND: Saturday’s game was essentially a tuneup for Dan Haren, who threw 78 pitches in five innings, giving up two runs and six hits. Haren is expected to start Game 3 or 4 of the National League division series next week, depending on the availability of Hyun-Jin Ryu. RHP Carlos Frias, on the bubble for a postseason roster spot, improved his chances with three hitless innings out of the bullpen, earning his first big-league win. He struck out five after Paco Rodriguez gave up a game-tying homer in the ninth. ... Rockies reliever LaTroy Hawkins, who has pitched for 10 teams in 20 big-league seasons, got the final out of the eighth while becoming the 16th man in history to pitch in 1,000 major league games.

EXTRA BASES: Dee Gordon and Hanley Ramirez both left the game early, Gordon with right hip irritation and Ramirez after fouling a ball off his left knee. Neither injury is considered serious although Gordon underwent an MRI exam. ... Manager Don Mattingly continues to be encouraged with the progress made by Ryu, whose availability for the playoffs is on hold because of shoulder inflammation. Ryu, who hasn’t pitched in a game in more than two weeks, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Sunday, when Game 1 starter Clayton Kershaw is expected to pitch in a brief simulated game.
