MLB report: Red Sox fumigate locker room to fight flu bug

The Boston Red Sox have fumigated and disinfected their clubhouse at Fenway Park to help fight the flu.

Boston manager John Farrell says it has been done a few times while the team has been on the road.

After closing a series in Detroit on Monday, Boston is scheduled to begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday night against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Red Sox (3-2) have been hit hard by the bug.

Hanley Ramirez has played just two games because of it, and Mookie Betts returned to the lineup Sunday after the flu kept him out for almost a week. Robbie Ross is on the disabled list with the illness, and even broadcaster Dave O’Brien has been sidelined with symptoms.

New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez’s right biceps injury is more serious than initial indications suggested, and manager Joe Girardi said last year’s rookie sensation will miss at least four weeks. Sanchez went on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with a strained biceps. An MRI test Monday revealed a Grade 1 strain of the brachialis, a muscle behind the biceps. … The Washington Nationals put shortstop Trea Turner on the 10-day DL because of a strained right hamstring. Turner, second in the 2016 NL rookie-of-the-year vote, was injured running the bases Saturday in a loss to Philadelphia. …

Boston put outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. on the 10-day DL because of a sprained knee. . . . St. Louis activated right-hander Trevor Rosenthal, who’d been on the DL with a muscle strain in his right side. The former closer, who tried to win a rotation spot this spring, will pitch out of the bullpen. . . . Detroit sent struggling right-handed reliever Bruce Rondon to triple-A Toledo.
