Lakers week in review

The off-season thus far has been a quiet one for the Lakers, other than Mike D’Antoni resigning as coach.

General Manager Mitch Kupchak, visiting Chicago for the NBA draft combine, said the team doesn’t “intend to hire a coach any time soon.”

Two potential candidates came off the Lakers’ list when Steve Kerr and Stan Van Gundy took head-coaching positions with the Golden State Warriors and Detroit Pistons, respectively. Van Gundy was also named president of basketball operations.

Meanwhile, the Lakers are eager to learn their draft position on Tuesday, when the NBA holds the draft lottery.

A number of prospects have impressed in Chicago. Arizona’s Aaron Gordon, UCLA’s Zach LaVine and Australia’s Dante Exum each stood out at the combine.

The Lakers have a 21.5% chance of landing a top-three pick in the draft. The team has a slim chance of drafting eighth (4%) or ninth (0.1%), but sixth (43.9%) or seventh (30.5%) is the Lakers’ most likely position in the draft.

Though Kupchak is hopeful for lottery success, he also acknowledged that he’s open to moving the pick.

It’s unclear who will be on the team next year, but the Lakers have already announced their 2014-15 preseason schedule.
