Cal State Fullerton is Omaha-bound after beating Louisville, 4-3, in 11

Cal State Fullerton is headed to Omaha, site of the College World Series.

The Titans came back from a two-run deficit to defeat Louisville, 4-3, in 11 innings Monday night at Louisville.

The hero?

There were several.

David Olmedo-Barrera slugged two home runs -- the first to right field in the first inning, the second an opposite-field shot that barely grazed the outside of the foul pole and was the game-winner.

The winning homer was reviewed by the NCAA baseball replay committee, but the call on the field -- a home run -- was confirmed.

Video replay on television showed that the ball landed outside the foul pole, but also that the ball appeared to barely brush the pole on the way past.

Thomas Eshelman, pitching on one day of rest after throwing 100 pitches in winning Game 1 on Saturday, came on to retire Louisville in the bottom of the 11th to record his first save.

It came with an assist from freshman catcher Chris Hudgins, who threw out a runner trying to steal second for the final out of the game.

The winning pitcher was Tyler Peitzmeier, a senior left-hander who had been the Titans’ closer. He came on in relief in the sixth inning and pitched through the 10th.

There was also a clutch hit by Jerrod Bravo that tied it in the eighth inning. With Fullerton down, 3-1, and the bases full of Titans with two outs and two strikes in the ninth inning, he bounced a single into left field off Louisville’s hard-throwing closer, Zack Burdi.

Second baseman Taylor Bryant was also a Titans hero simply by his hustle. With a runner heading to second in the 10th inning, he ran to the right-field line to back up first base on a Louisville sacrifice bunt, and ended up hauling in a throw that sailed high over first base and was headed to the right-field corner.

Fullerton’s College World Series opener in Omaha will be played Sunday at 6 p.m. PDT against defending champion Vanderbilt.
