Still banned by MLB, Pete Rose will be inducted into Reds Hall of Fame

Turns out Pete Rose’s failed application for reinstatement into Major League Baseball was somewhat fruitful after all.

Rose may never get into baseball’s Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., after Commissioner Rob Manfred last month upheld the all-time hits leader’s lifetime ban for gambling on the sport as a player and manager.

But at that time, Manfred left the door open for the Cincinnati Reds to celebrate Rose’s achievements (provided they get the commissioner’s permission first), and that’s just what they’re going to do this summer.

Rose was the sole selection for the Reds Hall of Fame in 2016, the team announced Tuesday, and will be inducted the weekend of June 24-26. The team’s board of directors lifted its former ban of players on baseball’s permanently ineligible list and bypassed its usual election process in choosing Rose.

“Inducting Pete into the Reds Hall of Fame will be a defining moment in the 147-year history of this storied franchise,” Reds Chief Executive Bob Castellini said in a statement. “He is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Reds uniform, and it will be an unforgettable experience watching him being honored as such.”

Rose spent 19 of his 24 years as a player in Cincinnati, finishing with 4,256 career hits in 1986. He remained with the Reds as manager until being permanently banned from baseball in August 1989. His jersey, No. 14, has never officially been retired, but only his son, Pete Rose Jr., has worn it with the team since.

“Pete Rose’s on-field achievements and impact on the Reds and its fan base are unquestionable and worthy of induction into the Reds Hall of Fame,” Reds Hall of Fame director Rick Walls said in a statement. “We look forward to this summer, where, in front of his fans and with his teammates, ‘Charlie Hustle’ will be recognized for his contributions to the rich and distinguished history of the Reds.”
