Boys’ basketball: A 53-point performance by LiAngelo Ball

It was quite a night in the quarterfinals of the Maranatha tournament.

First up, senior guard James Williams of Price scored 25 points, Roderick Williams had 19 points and 6-foot-7 junior Kesean Davis added 10 points and three dunks in Price’s 76-62 win over Westlake.

Then the real show took place. Chino Hills’ Ball brothers, sophomore LiAngelo and junior Lonzo, went up and down the court against Dorsey. When the game ended in a 111-80 Chino Hills victory, LiAngelo finished with 53 points and Lonzo had 30. It was exhausting just watching the brothers at a frantic pace. Price will meet Chino Hills in the semifinals on Friday.

In the consolation bracket, Pasadena defeated Highland, 57-43, and St. Francis defeated Canyon Springs, 45-25.

No. 1 Corona Centennial opened with an 86-59 win over Great Oak. Jordan Griffin scored 24 points and Sedrick Barefield had 22 points. Etiwanda defeated Eisenhower, 54-40. Kameron Edwards scored 17 points.

Fairfax Coach Harvey Kitani picked up his 700th career coaching victory in 35 seasons when the Lions defeated El Segundo, 70-17, in the El Segundo tournament. Donald Gipson and Babacar Thiombane each had 13 points. Loyola defeated Crossroads, 78-43. Max Hazzard scored 24 points and Henry Welsh had 11 points and 11 rebounds. El Camino Real defeated Westminster, 83-39. Chris Terry had 32 points.

In the Buckley tournament, the host Griffins defeated Malibu, 79-42. Brandon Ferguson finished with 28 points. Sylmar defeated Ribet, 80-59.

In the Mira Costa tournament, Brentwood defeated Gardena, 61-30, Andrew Gardiner scored 21 points. Alex Copeland had 25 points in Harvard-Westlake’s 73-39 win over Carson.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame knocked off Oaks Christian, 54-53, behind Chibueze Jacobs, who scored 27 points.

In the St. Monica tournament, Michael Oguine had 21 points in Chaminade’s 68-58 win over previously unbeaten University.

In the Burbank tournament, Bennie Boatwright had 26 points and 10 rebounds in Village Christian’s 87-45 win over Nogales. Zach Phipps scored 20 points in Saugus’ 63-59 win over Moorpark.

In the Simi Valley tournament, Cesar Reyes had 22 points and 10 rebounds but Poly was beaten by the host Pioneers, 56-47. Bolden Brace scored 16 points in Santa Barbara’s 82-60 win over Cleveland.

In the Westchester tournament, Bishop Montgomery defeated San Gabriel Academy, 85-49. Stephen Thompson Jr. had 23 points. Westchester defeated Hart, 54-41. The winners will advance to Friday’s semifinals at 7:45 p.m. In a consolation game, King-Drew defeated Morningside, 68-57.

In the Rancho Mirage tournament, Charles Neal scored 31 points in Rancho Mirage’s 66-64 win over Los Osos. Other scores: Brawley 57, Xavier 47; Hillcrest 68, Desert Hot Springs 35; Coachella Valley 51, Palo Verde 39.

In the Ocean View tournament, South Gate defeated Central City, 75-50. Freshman David Mixon scored 17 points.

In the West Torrance tournament, Crespi defeated Long Beach Cabrillo, 77-37. Mitch Mykhaylov had 13 points.

In the San Dimas tournament, Rancho Cucamonga defeated Rowland, 70-50. Tamer Jabsheh had 16 points and nine assists. Braxton Shaw added 16 points.

Servite defeated Santa Fe Christian, 48-47, on a three-pointer by Trevor Treinen with three seconds left. He finished with 23 points.
