Earthquake: 3.1 quake strikes near Avalon

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported Monday morning 13 miles from Avalon, Calif., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 2:09 a.m. PST time near the surface.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was 17 miles from Newport Beach and 19 miles from Costa Mesa.

In the last 10 days, there have been two earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
