Woman arrested after chase in stolen CHP car

A woman was arrested Thursday afternoon after leading dozens of police cars on a high-speed chase through San Diego in a stolen California Highway Patrol vehicle, officials said.

The chase began in the Mission Bay area, when a CHP officer was investigating a possible hit-and-run incident in which the woman was a suspect.

The handcuffed woman was put in the back of a CHP vehicle, officials said, but she managed to slip out of the restraints and drive away.The officer was outside of the vehicle looking at the woman’s damaged car.

As she began to tug on a rifle in the front seat of the CHP vehicle, the CHP officer fired several shots.

As she drove away, dozens of CHP and San Diego police officers gave chase. The chase ended near Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley when the woman driving the stolen CHP vehicle smashed into a civilian car, officials said.

As dozens of police surrounded the CHP car, the woman was taken into custody. Initial reports are that there were no injuries.

The woman’s identity was not released.
