The 12-year-old boy who died from a gunshot while attending a Boy Scouts outing in San Diego brought the gun from Las Vegas, police said Tuesday.

The gun was unregistered, Lt. Mike Hastings said.

The county medical examiner performed an autopsy Tuesday and identified the boy as Michael Shook.

The boy was part of a troop from Las Vegas that had arrived at the camp Sunday. He died from a wound to the “upper torso,” police said.

Police responded to a call about an attempted suicide Monday morning at the Fiesta Island Youth Camp on Mission Bay, which is taken over by the Boy Scouts during the summer.

No firearm training was part of the Boy Scouts program, officials said.

The boy was found in his tent at the camp. Despite attempts at resuscitation, he was declared dead at the scene.

Investigation into the death continues.
