Broads donate $100 million to biomedical research
Los Angeles philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad have given $100 million to their institute dedicated to biomedical research.
The gift brings the couple’s total donations to the Broad Institute to $700 million since it was founded about a decade ago. Harvard and MIT scientists from several fields, including biology, medicine and computer science, conduct research at the Cambridge, Mass., institute.
Instititute scientists have discovered hundreds of genes that lead to cancer, diabetes and other diseases. They have also developed drugs that can target those diseases.
Over the next decade, Broad scientists will focus developing road maps to treat other diseases, according to a press release.
The Broads donated $100 million in to the foundation in 2004, another $100 million a year later and $400 million in 2008. Their contributions make them the second-largest donors to a biomedical research organization.
The largest such gift was a $2-billion donation to create the Stowers Instititue for Medical Research in 2004.
