A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was hospitalized after a collision with a trash truck Friday, authorities say.

The collision occurred at 12:59 p.m. near the intersection of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Nordhoff Street in Chatsworth. The officer, who hasn’t been identified, was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, said CHP Public Information Officer Ming Hsu.

“All management from the office is with him at the local hospital,” Hsu said. “He did suffer serious injuries.”

Los Angeles police Lt. Andrew Neiman said the officer was headed southbound on Topanga Canyon Boulevard. The officer was driving his motorcycle on the curbside lane when the trash truck --which was traveling the same direction on the outside lane -- turned in front of him.

The officer is “conscious and breathing,” Neiman said.

The officer worked in the department’s West Valley office, Hsu said.

LAPD is investigating the collision.
