5-year-old killed in multi-vehicle crash on 60 Freeway is identified

The identity of the 5-year-old girl killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the 60 Freeway near South El Monte early Thursday has been released, authorities said.

The girl was identified as Maydelin Salas of South El Monte, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

More than a dozen people were injured in the crash. Of those, five are in critical condition, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The crash, which involved three big rigs and eight other vehicles, was reported about 5:40 a.m.

The freeway was partially closed for much of the morning as crews worked to clean up an estimated 100 gallons of diesel fuel plus about 6,500 gallons of milk from an overturned tanker.

The freeway fully reopened about 12:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
