L.A. County deputies to crack down on driving violators in Bellflower
The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department will be on the lookout next week for motorists violating driving laws in high-crash areas in Bellflower.
The Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operation is scheduled for next Thursday.
The announcement comes less than 24 hours after a man was killed when his motorcycle slammed into the front of a Metro bus in Chatsworth before striking a pole and catching fire.
Last month, Los Angeles Police Department motorcycle Officer Chris Cortijo died from injuries he suffered while waiting at a red light and was hit from behind by a woman suspected of being under the influence of drugs.
Next week’s operation will require deputies to keep an eye on motorcyclists and drivers for speeding, making illegal turns or any other dangerous violations, including being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Sheriff’s officials said in a news release that the operation’s main goal is to continue curbing the rise in motorcycle deaths.
A report by the Governors Highway Safety Assn. showed fatalities dropped by 13% in California in 2013.
