Woman drowns after driving car into Long Beach channel
The body of a young woman was recovered Saturday night in Long Beach after she drowned in her car in an apparent accident, according to police.
Late Saturday night, Long Beach police discovered Ashlee Armond’s 2001 Honda Civic underwater in a channel near Silvera Street, according to a statement from the Police Department. Members of the department’s dive team discovered the 20-year-old’s body inside the car.
Armond was last seen late Friday night driving away from a friend’s house, police said. Family members grew concerned and reported her missing after she didn’t arrive home or show up for work the following morning.
From their preliminary investigation, police believe Armond was driving along 5th Street, which comes to an end along the Los Cerritos channel. Armond apparently failed to stop, crossed a bike path and a strip of grass before plunging into the water, according to the police statement.
Police believe the crash was an accident, the statement said.
