Federal indictments target 5 San Francisco police officers
A federal grand jury has indicted five San Francisco police officers and a former city policeman in two separate cases, one involving the theft of drugs and computers from suspects, the U.S. attorney’s office announced Thursday.
A San Francisco Police Department sergeant, officer and former officer face multiple charges for allegedly selling marijuana, as well as allegedly stealing money, gift cards and computers from suspects.
Sgt. Ian Furminger, 47, of Pleasant Hill; Officer Edmond Robles, 46, of Danville; and former Officer Reynaldo Vargas, 45, of Palm Desert, are also accused of stealing drugs and valuables from the city.
In the second indictment, three officers were charged with civil rights violations for allegedly entering single-occupancy hotel rooms without legal justification and intimidating occupants.
Officers Arshad Razzak, 41, of San Francisco; Richard Yick, 37, of San Francisco; and Raul Eric Elias, 44, of San Mateo are also accused of falsifying evidence to hide wrongdoing.
The investigation was sparked after Jeffrey Adachi, a San Francisco public defender, released hotel surveillance footage from a hotel in the Tenderloin neighborhood of plainclothes officers entering hotel rooms.
The five current officers are expected to make their first court appearances Friday in federal court in San Francisco. Vargas is expected to be in court Thursday.
