Man killed in possible ‘suicide by cop’ after stabbing a baby to death

A man was fatally shot by an officer in Folsom after he stabbed a 6-month-old baby to death and seriously injured the child’s mother, police said.

Because of a statement he made before the stabbing, investigators believe the man, whose name has not been released, may have been trying to commit “suicide by cop,” said Folsom Police Officer Andrew Bates. The baby’s mother, Bates said, was the man’s aunt.

The man and the baby were pronounced dead at area hospitals, and the child’s mother remains in critical condition, Bates said.

Police arrived at a home in the 300 block of Montrose Drive about 2:30 p.m. Thursday after receiving a report about a stabbing. The man, who was in his 20s, had just stabbed his aunt and her baby son, Bates said. Covered in blood, he charged at an officer, who then fired one shot at him, the officer said.

A neighbor saw the injured woman struggling on a patch of grass outside, Fox 40 reported.

Another neighbor, Jessica Major, said on Fox 40, “How can you do something like that? It’s… it’s crazy.”
