Fire in northeast San Diego County burns 150 acres, destroys 2 homes

A brush fire Thursday in the heavily forested area east of Julian in northeast San Diego County has burned 150 acres and destroyed two homes, Cal Fire said.

The fire, which broke out about 10:30 a.m. in the Banner Grade area between Julian and the Anza-Borrego Desert, is 15% contained.

Six air tankers, four helicopters and several hundred firefighters are battling the blaze. No injuries have been reported, Cal Fire said.

Evacuation orders remain in place for the Kentwood and Whispering Palms areas. State Route 78 is closed between Julian High School and Scissors Crossing.

An evacuation center has been established at Jess Martin County Park.
