A suspected armed robber was shot and killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies early Tuesday after a three-hour standoff inside a convenience store in La Mirada, authorities said.

Video from media outlets showed the conclusion of the standoff, when the man suddenly emerged from the front of the AM/PM store in the 13500 block of South Beach Boulevard and fired at deputies, who returned fire, killing him, about 12:30 a.m.

In a news release, Sheriff’s Department officials said the man had already fired at deputies from inside the store and had refused commands to surrender.

The incident began as a report of an armed robbery about 9:15 p.m. Monday, said Sgt. Hank Ortega. The first deputies to arrive ordered the man to drop the weapon and surrender but instead he ran back inside the building, authorities said.

The man had at one point stepped just outside the front doors and appeared to yell at deputies while waving his hands in the air before going back inside, video showed.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released. No deputies were injured.
