A Lancaster woman was sentenced Tuesday to a year in jail for choking her pit bull mix dog with shoelaces and hitting its head with a rock.

Desiree Lenore Martinez, 41, also was ordered to serve three years’ probation for cruelty to an animal, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

She received a credit for having already served 256 days from Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Carlos Chung.

Martinez, who pleaded no contest in April to the abuse charge, is also banned from owning or caring for any animals for 10 years.

Prosecutors said Martinez caused serious injuries to her dog’s eyes and head Feb. 9 when she abused the animal.

The abandoned dog could barely move when it was found later in an empty lot, authorities said.

The dog received medical treatment and was eventually adopted, prosecutors said.
