Strong winds expected in Southern California starting Sunday evening
Forecasters are warning of gusty winds across parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties starting Sunday night, urging drivers to be careful of sudden crosswinds.
The Santa Ana winds are expected to last through midday Monday, with the strongest winds buffeting people in the mountains, especially around the Highway 14 and Interstate 5 corridors, according to the National Weather Service. The high winds are a result of a high pressure system developing over the region.
Forecasters predicted northeastern winds blowing between 20 and 30 miles per hour, with gusts of up to 50 miles per hour. Areas that could be affected include Topanga, Acton and Mount Wilson.
Similar wind warnings were issued for parts of the Inland Empire and San Diego County, including areas near Banning, around the San Diego County mountains and east of Interstate 10 in the Coachella Valley.
In some parts of the region, gusts could be even stronger than in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, blowing as fast as 60 miles per hour, the weather service warned.
Desert areas could also suffer from reduced visibility as the winds kick up sand and dust, according to the weather service.
The wind advisories will be in effect until 2 p.m. Monday.
