Shooting near U.C. Santa Barbara; people urged to stay indoors

A shooting near the campus of UC Santa Barbara on Friday night prompted the campus to issue an alert urging people to stay indoors.

According to the alert, two people had been detained after the shooting in Isla Vista. No further details were immediately released.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department “advised everybody [to stay] inside for now,” according to the campus message.

Several local news outlets reported the shooting may have occurred at a deli mart in Isla Vista and that several people were shot.

TV footage showed ambulances and police cars swarming the scene. Channel 3 in Santa Barbara reported that witnesses said multiple shots were fired from a car and that several people were hit. The Daily Nexus, the campus newspaper, reported a witness saying the car hit several pedestrians.
