In the latest sign that business interests are coalescing around his candidacy, Los Angeles County supervisorial candidate Bobby Shriver was endorsed Friday by former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan.

Riordan cited Shriver’s time on the Santa Monica City Council and his business and nonprofit backgrounds in announcing his support for the candidate. Shriver is seeking to replace Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky on the five-member Board of Supervisors.

“The job of Los Angeles County supervisor is a challenging and important one,’’ Riordan said in a prepared statement. “It requires someone who understands both local government and the private sector. I am endorsing Bobby Shriver for
supervisor because he has been successful in business, the nonprofit world,
and local government.”

Shriver produced Christmas records that generated $100 million for the Special Olympics, founded by his late mother Eunice Shriver. He also founded, along with U2 singer Bono, two nonprofit organizations that have steered billions to African nations to reduce poverty and alleviate AIDS.

Shriver in recent weeks has picked up the backing of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and its political arm, LA Jobs PAC, as well as the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Riordan, a well-connected and wealthy Republican who served as mayor for eight years in the 1990s, could help Shriver appeal to more conservative voters.

The June 3 primary election for the seat covering the Westside and the San Fernando Valley is officially nonpartisan. But all of the major candidates, including Shriver and his chief rivals, former state lawmaker Sheila Keuhl and West Hollywood Councilman John Duran, are Democrats.

Kuehl has also won a number of key endorsements in the heavily-Democratic district, including the L.A. County Democratic Party, the Sierra Club, the National Organization of Women and labor groups representing teachers, nurses and public employees.

“I continue to be very happy to have received the lion’s share of important endosements in this campaign,” she said in a brief statement.
