Where drivers see danger, skateboarders see a ramp on Vasquez Canyon Road

There isn’t a surface a skateboarder won’t grind – even a landslide.

That was the case this week when skateboarders decided to show off their skills on Vasquez Canyon Road, which for mysterious reasons began buckling last Thursday near Santa Clarita.

Skateboarders used the warped road left by the landslide as a platform to launch themselves into the air. They have been showing up at the site since Saturday despite barriers and no-trespassing signs.

“It’s dangerous and no one should be there,” said Steven Frasher, spokesman of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

The soil has continued to move, causing the pavement to shift.

Geologists and engineers still don’t know what is causing the hillside to slip under the pavement, creating a massive mound of crumpled road. The popular road was used by residents and cyclists looking for a short cut.

Because the hillside is on private property, geologists are observing its movement from a distance, Frasher said. However, they are still investigating the cause of the slip and hope to get samples of the soil, he added.

There is no way to stop the soil movement, so for now geologists and engineers are just watching the ground and hoping that it becomes less restless, Frasher said.

But for now, Frasher said people should stay away from the area.

“It’s just not a smart place to be,” he said.
